Balaclava Residence
Architecture by Mary Koutrakys-Jacobson. Built by Howard & Brown. Photography by Peter Marko.
Private Residence.
Our Balaclava residence is a mixture of styles. The original 1920s Californian bungalow featured elements of art deco, art nouveau and arts and crafts but needed a lot of love to bring it back to its former glory. We wanted to add on a more modern extension yet one that referenced the curved bay window at the front so that the language front and back had a common element. Influenced by the architecture and interiors of Craig Ellwood the rear of the house is a nod to mid-century modern design yet sits harmoniously with the mixture of earlier styles (in the original part of the house) due to the curved bay window link at front and back. The original part of the house is a lot darker and so we embraced moodier finishes and furniture whilst the back of the house celebrates light with large windows welcoming the outdoors in.
